Ben Machine’s Programming Advantage

We employ the latest in precision CNC machining, including 5-axis machining centres with spindle speeds up to 15,000 RPM and large capacity lathes with live tooling. The result of these investments yields lower part costs and faster results to our customers.

Using process models in CAD, files can be imported into CAM allowing programming to be done in advance of the part being set up, reducing the set-up time dramatically. Our CAM programmers optimize programs creating speedy CNC cycle times.

Our first part yield rate is high as the programmer and machinist identify risks with the program prior to a cut being made on a part. The CAD file is also used to program our Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM). The continuity of the one base file reduces time and risk of errors.

The Benefit of 5-Axis CNC Machining

A complicated part using standard machining technology will require multiple machines and set-ups, which can increase part cost. Ben Machine has invested in numerous 3, 4, and 5 axis CNC Milling machines to minimize set ups and associated cost increases. In addition, all our 5-axis machines have simultaneous machining capability, allowing the machine to move in multiple axes at the same time. These are at the cutting edge of CNC milling technology.

Imagine holding a part in your hand and machining it while moving and rotating your wrist. Picture material being shaved away, and holes drilled into it. This is what our 5-axis machines do, allowing one machine to tackle more features of the part and reduce the number of machines required – lowering part cost for our customers and delivering a higher quality product in less time.

While many CNC machining service providers have a 5 axis in their facility, Ben Machine has many, and duplicate models, creating excellent capacity management to ensure our parts are delivered on time. With an eye towards agile investments in equipment, Ben Machine also has a stable of standard 3- and 4-axis CNC mills that can be upgraded to 5 axis machining centers to respond to changes in customer requirements and volumes.

The Ben Machine Difference

Ben Machine has embraced the trend toward high spindle speed machines. Some of our CNC machines will deliver up to 15,000 RPM.

A trend within the CNC market, which Ben Machine has embraced, is the use of high spindle speeds, up to 15,000 RPM in some cases. Our investments in new CNC milling machines have focused on higher spindle speeds reducing machining times by up to half from older generation CNC mills. These machines come equipped with air cleaners, capturing coolants within the machine, not allowing them to escape into the ambient air. This is better for our expert machinists’ health, while allowing coolants to be recycled and reused.

Turning to our CNC lathes, Ben Machine has invested heavily in leading CNC technology. Recognizing a need to further advance our lathe capabilities, Ben Machine added live tooling to its CNC turning centres. This allows us to create parts with greater precision, consolidating both turning and milling processes into a single set up. Aside from reducing lead times, Ben Machine leverages the higher quality that comes from turning, milling, drilling, and tapping in a single operation.

Ben Machine’s lathes accommodate larger diameter pieces easily and have higher horsepower to provide an aggressive depth of cut — reducing the machining time and cost of the part. Our CNC lathe department also has chuck speeds with higher RPM to reduce machining time on parts.

Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) is an important metric within a world class machining facility. The majority of our CNCs are purchased from Haas Automation a recognized leader in CNCs that are designed and built in North America. Consolidation on a single CNC machine improves our OEE by minimizing our spare parts while covering a range of machines. This reduces our downtime and provides a higher rate of machine utilization (spindle time) giving us reliable lead times and capacities.

While CNCs have become the standard in machining, we still have manual milling and turning centers. These machines and the skilled craftspeople that run them still add value and flexibility to our offering. They are ideal for low volume parts needed in current production, or producing parts in support of legacy customer designs.
